A brand-new era for the hobby officially began on the 6th of October 2025, when BBC Studios and Heathside Trading dropped a joint press release announcing the grand return of Doctor Who: Battles in Time. Released through the updated Master Replicas storefront, the Retroduction Set served as a special commemorative launch to mark the landmark 20th anniversary of the original 2006 Exterminator series.
Acting as a spiritual "Test Set" for a planned wider revival, the special Game Pack consists of 80 unique cards designed with a clever mix of nostalgia and modern lore:
72 Classic Reissues: 72 beloved cards selected from the original mid-2000s runs, printed on a premium, specialized foil style for the absolute first time.
8 All-New Cards: 8 brand-new cards introducing Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor and his companion era directly into the Battles in Time system.
"We have a long history of working on trading cards at Heathside, and a few of us were collectors of the original Battles in Time game, so we’re thrilled to be bringing it back to fans with all new cards. We’re excited to be expanding our range with BBC Studios following the success of our wider Doctor Who collectibles portfolio..."
— Darren Epstein, EVP of Global Business Development at Heathside
"Doctor Who has one of the richest archives in entertainment, and Battles in Time is a beloved part of that legacy. We’re delighted to be working with Heathside to bring this iconic trading card game back to fans, both in its original form and with exciting new additions. It’s a fantastic way to celebrate the 20th anniversary..."

While classic expansions like Daleks vs Cybermen or the Adventurer series used letter prefixes (like DVC01 or SJA01) to denote a standalone set, the Retroduction series handles numbering differently:
Standalone Numbering Block: The set completely breaks away from the original 1,075-card master registry left behind by Devastator. Instead, it resets the counter entirely, running standalone from 1 to 80.
Standard Numerical Format: The set rejects letter prefixes, opting for clean integers on the frame. For example, the promotional Dalek card included in the set is labeled simply as Number 12.

While the Retroduction set mirrors classic mini-sets like Daleks vs Cybermen and Adventurer by containing only Common cards, the physical production value has received a massive modern upgrade. Instead of being printed on basic, non-foil card stock, every single card in this anniversary set features a specialized holographic foil.
Early hands-on reviews from the community indicate that this new "shimmer" foil is of superior quality compared to mid-2000s releases—producing a vibrant depth and motion effect that closely resembles the original, highly coveted Super Rares.
This universal foil upgrade creates an intriguing rarity shift for legacy collectors. Because every card in the box is mechanically designated as a Common, iconic cards from the original run have been functionally downshifted in rarity.
For instance the Weeping Angel (Attacking) card (originally an elusive Rare in the Invader set) has also been reclassified as a Common.
The Retroduction Set arrives as a complete collector's experience inside a stylized promotional display box. In addition to the core card stack, the box includes an oversized promotional display card showcasing the remastered Exterminator Dalek artwork.
The box features two entirely separate booster pack wrapper designs that perfectly bridge the game's 20-year history:
The Whoniverse Wrap (Left): A sleek, modern design sporting the current "Disney+ and BBC" era cosmic nebula palette, tailored to the aesthetics of 2020s Doctor Who.
The Anniversary Wrap (Right): A beautifully rebranded Exterminator throwback pack, seamlessly incorporating the modern diamond-shaped Doctor Who logo over the classic template.
The artwork surrounding the packs showcases a dynamic blend of past and present. Nestled among iconic character cards spanning from Exterminator through to Devastator are the fresh entries defining this new era. This includes The Fifteenth Doctor and The Eleventh Doctor, marking two of the eight highly anticipated brand-new designs injected into the 80-card checklist.

Spotted in the Wild: The London Toy Fair: The public caught its first physical glimpse of these prototypes at the 2026 London Toy Fair. A showcase display featured an early pre-production run of the Retroduction set to give fans an idea of what the card thickness and holographic sheen would look like in person. If you look closely at photos from the event, the "Exterminator" text is clearly visible on the frames, serving as the first major hint to the community that a layout change was underway behind the scenes.
The Deleted TikTok Teaser: Further media tracking captured these test prints in motion. Darren Epstein, EVP of Heathside Trading, posted a teaser video showcasing a handful of the cards fresh from the factory. In the video, the shimmering gold "Exterminator" branding could clearly be seen under the studio lights. Following the final decision to update the branding to Retroduction for the official retail launch, this video was promptly deleted from TikTok, turning the footage into a legendary piece of 2026 Battles in Time lost media.
During the early months of 2026, the first promotional images and teaser videos for the Retroduction revival began trickling out online. Sharp-eyed collectors immediately noticed that the card designs featured in the marketing materials appeared to be laid out chronologically by era—starting with Exterminator and moving through to Annihilator.
However, these early previews sparked massive confusion across the fandom. Instead of bearing the Retroduction set title, the cards clearly displayed the classic Exterminator branding along their base.
It has since been officially confirmed that these cards were early prototype test prints never intended for public distribution. According to industry insiders, only about 10 full sets of these prototype cards survived the production phase—the rest were completely destroyed.
Modern collectors can easily differentiate these ultra-rare test prints from the standard public release using two major visual tells:
The Set Name: The prototypes are mistakenly labelled Exterminator rather than Retroduction.
Gold Foil Foil Stamping: The bottom set logo on the prototypes is stamped in a rich, metallic gold foil, whereas the final public retail versions feature clean silver foil branding.
For archival and authentication purposes, the known "Gold Logo" test prints are archived below. You can compare these directly to the standard silver-stamped Retroduction cards displayed in the main checklist above.
With a two-decade gap separating the original print runs from the 20th-anniversary revival, several prominent mechanical, structural, and graphic changes have been introduced to the card templates.
While the core game rules remain intact, collectors have identified four major design shifts separating the classic era from the modern 2026 printings:
1. The Modernized "Whoniverse" Card Backs
The most immediate and radical transformation is on the reverse side of the card stock. The iconic, dark blue 2006-era time vortex background has been completely retired. The new layout embraces the current era's branding with a highly saturated, cosmic "BBC & Disney" nebula design. This injects significantly more color, light, and depth into the card backs. Notably, while the primary BATTLES IN TIME metallic typography remains identical to the 2006 original, it is now proudly crowned by the modern diamond-shaped Doctor Who logo.
2. The Premium "Shimmer" Foil Upgrade
The physical feel of the cards has been completely elevated. Rather than utilizing the flat, plain silver foil overlay seen on classic Rares, the 2026 Retroduction set implements a premium "Shimmer Foil" card stock. This updated material offers a far more dynamic diffraction effect under direct light, giving even basic Common entries a premium texture that surpasses the quality of the original mid-2000s print runs.
3. The Comic-Con Cruise "Skill" Stat Anomaly
A bizarre structural anomaly has been spotted on special promotional variants released during recent convention events. On the exclusive Comic-Con Cruise cards, the second statistic title on the right-hand attribute column has been changed from Agility to Skill.
While the collector community has reached out to Heathside Trading for clarification, the reason for this mechanical text change remains unknown. Crucially, this edit appears to be entirely unique to the niche Comic-Con Cruise promos, as standard Retroduction base set cards retain the classic Agility naming convention.
4. The White-Background Dalek Icon
On the front of the cards, the tiny faction and character indicator icons have remained largely unchanged—with one glaring exception. On Retroduction cards, the classic Dalek silhouette icon is now framed against a stark white circular background instead of its traditional solid black background. As of right now, this is the only legacy icon to receive a graphic alteration, and the design choice remains a mystery to archive researchers.
In November 2025, BBC Studios and San Diego Comic Convention announced an official Doctor Who partnership for the high seas with Comic-Con: The Cruise Vol. 2, which set sail in early 2026. Among the packed programming was a highly anticipated "father-daughter reunion" panel featuring Alex Kingston (River Song) and Arthur Darvill (Rory Williams).
To celebrate the event, passengers attending the panel were treated to an incredible surprise: exclusive, officially licensed promotional trading cards featuring River Song and Rory Williams.
A Standalone Miniature Set
These convention giveaways completely break away from the core 80-card Retroduction anniversary set. Much like the classic Daleks vs Cybermen or Adventurer mini-sets, these promos function entirely as their own self-contained micro-expansion:
Unique Set Numbering: The cards drop standard numbers, featuring a new "C" prefix in the top-left corner.
A Two-Card Master Checklist: The cards are explicitly numbered out of a total set of two (C01/002 and C02/002), confirming that the set is fully complete with just River and Rory.
Structural Anomalies: The "Sharp Corner" Variants
Beyond their limited distribution, these cards represent a historic first for the 20-year history of the franchise. They are the first-ever Battles in Time cards strictly limited to physical event attendees, creating an instant Holy Grail for completionists.
They also feature a glaring production difference that makes them instantly recognizable even in a photograph: the cards have sharp, square edges. Every other card printed in the history of Battles in Time—from the 2006 Exterminator set to the 2026 Retroduction run—was manufactured with rounded corners. This unique, straight-cut corner style makes the Cruise variants stand completely apart in a binder layout.
