The Battles in Time magazine was distributed outside the United Kingdom, with contemporary material confirming availability in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
Comparison of surviving issues indicates that the international magazines appear to be physically identical to their UK counterparts. No differences in the magazine's editorial content, card checklists or general design have currently been identified.
The available evidence also does not indicate that separate card sets were produced for these markets. The cards appear to have been distributed from the same product ranges used in the UK, although further examples of international-supplied packs and cards would be required to conclusively rule out regional production or distribution variations.
The international releases can therefore currently be regarded as distribution markets for the existing Battles in Time product rather than separate editions. Where differences have been identified in surviving examples, these should be documented individually rather than attributed to a particular country without supporting evidence.
Although Doctor Who: Battles in Time was originally developed and launched in the United Kingdom, the magazine and trading card collection were subsequently distributed in several international markets.
Surviving contemporary material confirms distribution or subscription availability in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The international editions formed part of the wider Battles in Time publication rather than separate trading card collections.
At present, the available evidence confirms international distribution but does not establish that separate magazines were produced specifically for each overseas market.Â
The Australian release followed the UK launch. Distribution arrangements differed according to location. Contemporary references indicate that the magazine was available through newsagents in South Australia, while in other parts of Australia it was primarily distributed through subscription.
Australian subscription and back-issue enquiries were handled by Bissett Magazines in Nunawading, Victoria. Contemporary Battles in Time magazines provided a postal address, telephone number and email contact for Australian subscribers.
The Australian market is also documented through the promotional television advertising produced for the collection. The Australian advertisement used later national card and packaging artwork rather than the Test Set designs shown in the UK advertisements. This provides evidence that the promotional material was adapted to reflect the later version of the product.
Further research is required to establish whether Australian copies of the magazines, booster packs, promotional inserts or cards contain physical differences from their UK counterparts.
Battles in Time was also distributed in New Zealand through a subscription service. Contemporary magazine material identifies NDC in Ponsonby, Auckland as the New Zealand distributor and provides a dedicated postal address, telephone number and email contact for subscribers.
The surviving evidence currently confirms the availability of the magazine and subscription service but does not establish whether the New Zealand card packs or magazines contained significant physical differences from the UK editions.
South Africa was another market in which Battles in Time material was made available. Contemporary magazine material lists South Africa alongside Australia and New Zealand for back issues and customer enquiries.
Surviving references identify a South African postal address and telephone contact for Battles in Time enquiries. Further physical evidence is required to establish the precise distribution method, issue availability and whether South African copies contained any market-specific variations.
