At various points during the original Battles in Time magazine run, GE Fabbri released Special Edition magazines outside the standard fortnightly publication schedule.
Most of these Special Edition releases were associated with the introduction of a new trading card expansion and served as launch issues for the corresponding collection. With one exception, each Special Edition introduced a new card checklist.
The exception was the Daleks vs. Cybermen Special. Rather than launching a new main expansion, this issue was supplied with cards from the existing Exterminator collection. The Special included the complete range of standard Exterminator cards available at the time, excluding the variant holographic cards.
The Special Edition magazines therefore served several different purposes within the Battles in Time publication, with the majority functioning as launch points for new card collections and the Daleks vs. Cybermen Special providing an alternative format centred on an existing set.
The first Special Edition of Doctor Who: Battles in Time was published on 16 May 2007 and was edited by Claire Lister.
The Special focused on the Daleks and Cybermen and used a reversible magazine format, with a Dalek cover on one side and a Cyberman cover on the other.
Unlike most subsequent Special Editions, the Daleks vs Cybermen Special did not introduce a new main card expansion. Instead, it contained two exclusive booster packs, one themed around the Daleks and the other around the Cybermen.
Each booster pack contained eight Common foil cards and one Rare card. The Rare cards used foil treatments based on designs associated with the regular Super Rare cards and featured either the Cyber Leader or Dalek Sec. Four variants of these Rare cards were produced across the two packs.
The Special also included a TARDIS tin, card stands and dice.
