A new series of Doctor Who: Battles in Time products was announced on 6 October 2025 in a joint press release from BBC Studios and Heathside Trading. The new collection was distributed through the updated Master Replicas storefront.
The Retroduction Set was introduced as a commemorative release marking the 20th anniversary of the original Battles in Time collection, which began with the Exterminator Test Set in 2006.
The release also served as an initial product for the planned continuation of the Battles in Time trading card system, combining reissued material from the original collections with newly produced cards featuring characters and material from the modern Doctor Who series.
The Retroduction Game Pack consists of 80 unique cards divided into two categories:
Classic reissues: 72 cards selected from the original Battles in Time collections. These cards were reproduced using a specialised foil card finish not used on the original versions.
New cards: 8 newly produced cards featuring Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor and characters associated with his era of Doctor Who.
The combination of reissued cards and newly produced material allows the Retroduction Set to connect the original Battles in Time collections with the subsequent Doctor Who television era.
"We have a long history of working on trading cards at Heathside, and a few of us were collectors of the original Battles in Time game, so we’re thrilled to be bringing it back to fans with all new cards. We’re excited to be expanding our range with BBC Studios following the success of our wider Doctor Who collectibles portfolio..."
— Darren Epstein, EVP of Global Business Development at Heathside
"Doctor Who has one of the richest archives in entertainment, and Battles in Time is a beloved part of that legacy. We’re delighted to be working with Heathside to bring this iconic trading card game back to fans, both in its original form and with exciting new additions. It’s a fantastic way to celebrate the 20th anniversary..."

The Retroduction Set uses a numbering system that differs from both the main Battles in Time collections and earlier standalone mini-sets.
Earlier standalone collections, including Daleks vs Cybermen and the Adventurer Series, used letter-based prefixes to distinguish their cards from the main collection. Examples include DVC01 for Daleks vs Cybermen and SJA01 for the Adventurer Series.
The Retroduction Set does not continue the 1,075-card numbering sequence established by the Devastator Set. Instead, it uses a separate numbering block consisting of 80 cards numbered from 1 to 80.
The cards do not use a letter prefix. Card numbers are displayed as standalone integers within the card design. For example, the promotional jumbo Dalek card included with the Retroduction Set is identified simply as card number 12.
This numbering system establishes the Retroduction Set as a separate collection rather than an extension of the original 1,075-card Battles in Time sequence.

The Retroduction Set differs from earlier standalone mini-sets in its use of a holographic foil finish. Although all of the cards are designated as Common within the Retroduction Set, every card features a specialised holographic foil treatment rather than the non-foil card stock used for many cards in the original Battles in Time collections.
Early collector and community reviews have described the new foil treatment as having greater visual depth and a more pronounced reflective effect than many of the card finishes used in the original mid-2000s releases. Comparisons have also been made between the appearance of the Retroduction foil and the holographic finishes used on Super Rare cards in the original collections. These assessments are subjective and are based on observations of the physical cards.
The universal application of the foil finish means that the physical appearance of Retroduction cards does not correspond directly to their rarity classification. All 80 cards are designated as Common cards within the Retroduction collection, regardless of the rarity assigned to an equivalent card in an earlier release.
For example, the Weeping Angel (Attacking) card was originally classified as a Rare card in the Invader collection. Its Retroduction counterpart is designated as a Common card within the new collection.
The rarity classification therefore applies to each individual collection and does not necessarily carry over when artwork or subjects are reproduced in subsequent releases.
The Retroduction Set is supplied in a promotional display box containing the card collection and an oversized promotional display card. The display card features remastered artwork based on a Dalek image from the Exterminator collection.
The box contains two distinct booster pack wrapper designs, each reflecting a different aspect of the Battles in Time brand's history.
Whoniverse wrapper: This wrapper uses a contemporary Doctor Who design incorporating a cosmic nebula-style background and the branding associated with the modern Doctor Who era.
Anniversary wrapper: This wrapper uses a design based on the original Exterminator packaging, incorporating the modern diamond-shaped Doctor Who logo into the earlier visual template.
The combination of the two wrapper designs provides a visual distinction between the original Battles in Time aesthetic and the design language used for the Retroduction release.
The artwork displayed around the card packs combines reproduced material from the original Battles in Time collections with newly produced artwork.
Cards and imagery representing characters and subjects from the Exterminator, Annihilator, Invader, Ultimate Monsters and Devastator collections appear alongside newly introduced material.
The new material includes the Fifteenth Doctor and the Eleventh Doctor, both of which form part of the eight newly produced cards included within the 80-card Retroduction checklist.

Physical prototypes of the Retroduction Set were publicly displayed at the 2026 London Toy Fair. The showcase provided an early opportunity to examine pre-production examples of the collection before its release.
The displayed prototypes provided an indication of the intended card thickness and holographic foil finish of the production cards. Photographs from the event also show the word “Exterminator” incorporated into the card frames.
The presence of the Exterminator branding on the prototype cards provided an early indication that elements of the original Battles in Time card layout were being incorporated into the new Retroduction designs.
As pre-production examples, the cards displayed at the event may differ from the final production versions.
Additional footage of the Retroduction Set prototypes was published on TikTok by Darren Epstein, Executive Vice President of Heathside Trading. The video showed several test-print cards and provided a further view of their physical appearance and holographic finish.
The footage showed gold “Exterminator” branding incorporated into the card frames. This branding differs from the “Retroduction” branding used on the cards released commercially.
The TikTok video was subsequently removed from the platform following the adoption of the final Retroduction branding. The surviving references to the footage provide evidence of an earlier stage in the development of the card designs and demonstrate that the final branding was changed during the production process.
The video is therefore of interest as documentation of a pre-release version of the Retroduction Set.
During the early months of 2026, promotional images and teaser videos for the Retroduction collection began appearing online. The cards shown in these early materials attracted attention because their designs appeared to follow the chronology of the earlier Battles in Time collections, beginning with Exterminator and continuing through subsequent releases.
The cards displayed in the early promotional material carried Exterminator branding along the bottom of the card frame rather than the Retroduction branding used on the final production cards. This initially led to uncertainty among collectors concerning the identity and intended status of the cards.
The cards were subsequently identified as pre-production prototype test prints that were not intended for public distribution. Reports concerning their production indicate that approximately 10 complete prototype sets survived the production process. The exact number produced and the number that survived have not been independently confirmed.
The prototype cards can be distinguished from the final Retroduction cards by two principal characteristics:
Set name: The prototype cards are labelled “EXTERMINATOR” along the bottom of the card frame. The final production cards use “RETRODUCTION”.
Foil stamping: The set branding on the prototype cards is produced using metallic gold foil. The corresponding branding on the final retail cards uses silver foil.
These characteristics provide a means of distinguishing the prototype versions from the cards distributed as part of the commercial Retroduction release.
A complete set of the known gold-logo prototype cards has been documented and scanned for the DRWHOTC archive. The scans provide a record of the prototype artwork, numbering, card designs and gold foil treatment.
The complete prototype set is presented separately from the standard Retroduction checklist to preserve the distinction between pre-production test prints and the final commercially released cards.
The reported production and survival figures for the prototype cards remain provisional unless further production documentation becomes available.
The Retroduction collection introduces a number of mechanical, structural and graphic differences from the card designs used during the original Battles in Time releases between 2006 and 2008.
While the underlying Battles in Time game system remains based on the original format, several changes can be identified when the Retroduction cards are compared with their predecessors.
The reverse of the Retroduction cards uses a substantially different design from the cards produced during the original Battles in Time run. The dark blue time-vortex design used on the original card backs has been replaced by a contemporary cosmic design incorporating the current BBC and Disney branding. The metallic BATTLES IN TIME typography remains consistent with the original card design, while the modern diamond-shaped Doctor Who logo has been incorporated above it.
Retroduction cards use a holographic foil finish that differs from the finishes employed on the original Battles in Time cards. The new material produces a more pronounced diffraction effect when viewed under direct light. Unlike the original collections, where foil effects were generally associated with particular rarity classifications, the Retroduction foil treatment is applied across the collection, including cards designated as Common. The physical card stock and finish therefore represent a significant production difference between the Retroduction cards and many of their original counterparts.
A variation has been documented on promotional cards associated with Comic-Con Cruise events. On these cards, the second statistic in the right-hand attribute column is labelled “SKILL” rather than “AGILITY”. According to information provided by members of the creative team involved with the new Battles in Time cards, the Skill terminology originated from an earlier card template that predates the Test Set. The terminology was subsequently carried over to the promotional cards and was not identified during the quality-control process. The variation appears to be restricted to the relevant Comic-Con Cruise promotional cards. Standard Retroduction cards retain the “AGILITY” statistic used in the established Battles in Time format.
The faction and character indicator icons on the front of the Retroduction cards retain much of the visual design established by the original collections. An identified exception is the Dalek indicator. On Retroduction cards, the Dalek silhouette is displayed against a white circular background rather than the solid black background used on the corresponding earlier icon. No confirmed explanation for this alteration has been documented. The change is therefore recorded as a design variation rather than being attributed to a specific production decision.
In November 2025, BBC Studios and San Diego Comic Convention announced a Doctor Who partnership associated with Comic-Con: The Cruise Vol. 2, which took place in early 2026.
The event included a Doctor Who programme featuring a panel with Alex Kingston, who portrayed River Song, and Arthur Darvill, who portrayed Rory Williams.
Promotional trading cards featuring River Song and Rory Williams were produced for distribution in connection with the event. The cards were officially licensed and were distributed separately from the main 80-card Retroduction collection.
The Comic-Con Cruise cards form a separate two-card promotional collection rather than part of the Retroduction checklist. Their structure is comparable to earlier standalone promotional collections such as Daleks vs Cybermen and the Adventurer Series.
The cards use a separate numbering system identified by a “C” prefix. The two cards are numbered:
C01/002 — River Song
C02/002 — Rory Williams
The numbering indicates a total collection size of two cards.
The Comic-Con Cruise cards have several physical characteristics that distinguish them from the standard Retroduction cards.
Most notably, the cards have square, unrounded corners. This differs from the rounded-corner construction used on the original Battles in Time cards and the 2026 Retroduction cards. The square corners provide a readily identifiable physical distinction between the Comic-Con Cruise promotional cards and the other Battles in Time releases.
The cards were distributed in connection with the Comic-Con: The Cruise Vol. 2 event rather than through the standard retail distribution of the Retroduction collection. Their event-specific distribution makes them a distinct promotional release within the modern Battles in Time archive.
From August 2026, Retroduction box sets began appearing in B&M stores across the United Kingdom.
The box sets were sold at a retail price of £24.99.
