Following the regional Test Run, Doctor Who: Monster Invasion was released nationwide in the United Kingdom in 2011. The national collection represented a substantial expansion of the experimental 90-card Test Set, increasing the checklist to 165 cards and introducing a number of revised designs and card finishes. Although the fundamental card categories remained unchanged, the nationwide collection featured updated artwork, packaging and card-back designs. The most obvious visual change was on the reverse of the cards, where the bronze Daleks used on the Test Set were replaced by the brightly coloured Paradigm Daleks associated with the Eleventh Doctor era. The booster-pack artwork was similarly updated to reflect the final national design.
The national Monster Invasion collection consisted of 165 cards, numbered across six principal categories, together with a single Infinite card. The categories retained the colour-coded system introduced during the Test Run:
Doctors — 14 blue cards
Villains — 20 purple cards
Doctor's Allies — 30 turquoise cards
Monsters — 37 red cards
Gadgets — 18 green cards
Adventures — 45 yellow cards
Infinite — 1 card
In addition to their rarity, several cards incorporated interactive elements designed to connect the physical collection with the official Monster Invasion website. These cards formed part of the collection's wider attempt to combine traditional trading cards with online entertainment.
The transition from the Test Set to the national collection was not simply a matter of adding additional cards. Existing designs could also be substantially reworked before reaching the shelves. One particularly notable example is the Weeping Angel. In the regional Test Set, the card was produced using a foil finish. For the national release, however, the card was redesigned with a textured surface. The texture was deliberately intended to evoke the rough appearance of stone, providing a physical representation of the Weeping Angel's distinctive appearance. This is an important characteristic of the Monster Invasion collection: special cards were not always distinguished solely by their rarity. Specialised printing and finishing techniques were also used to give individual cards a physical identity appropriate to their subject matter.
National Monster Invasion booster packs contained nine randomised cards and retained the six main categories established during the Test Run. The much larger checklist meant that collectors now had considerably more cards to discover than were available during the regional experiment. The packaging itself was also redesigned for the national launch. Most notably, the Paradigm Daleks replaced the bronze Dalek imagery used on the Test Set packaging, providing an immediate visual distinction between the two releases.
The national release was also supported by specially produced Monster Invasion card tins. These provided an alternative way of purchasing the collection and were particularly useful for collectors looking to obtain several packs together. Each tin contained five booster packs of Monster Invasion cards. The first Dalek tin, contained the exploding Tardis card.
The Monster Invasion Test Set and National Release should be treated as separate collecting areas. While many characters and designs appear in both, differences in numbering, rarity, card backs, finishes, packaging and the unique Regenerate Infinite make the two releases independently significant.
This archive documents both versions wherever examples are available, allowing the development of Monster Invasion from its regional experiment into the nationwide collection to be examined card-by-card.
Modified back to show coloured daleks rather than bronze.
This tin contained five packs of Monster invasion cards. It also came with the exploding tardis card, and was retailed for approximately £10.
Retail box for the original set of Monster Invasion, available in all newsagents. The packaging on this was completely changed from the Test Set with the most notable change being a green colour rather than red.

Due to no images being available on a sealed Issue 3, I have used photoshop to render an approximation of what the original Issue 3 would have looked like.
