This section documents digital image files associated with the production of Doctor Who: Battles in Time trading cards. A selection of original digital image files used in the card-production process has been acquired for archival purposes.
Unlike scans of physical cards, these source images are not affected by the visual characteristics of foil, holographic or lenticular printing. They can therefore show artwork without the physical printing effects present on the finished cards and may reveal areas of the original artwork that are obscured or cropped on the physical releases.
The original Battles in Time website also made a selection of digital card artwork available to download during the original card series. These images were generally provided at a resolution of 300 × 419 pixels. The Regeneration artwork shown alongside this section is an example of one of these historical digital images.
Although higher-resolution versions of some production images are now available for archival reference, the images presented on this website are intentionally displayed at the same 300 × 419 pixel resolution used by the original official website.
This approach preserves the historical presentation of the material while avoiding the publication of the original high-resolution production assets. It also allows the artwork to be documented and examined without making the full-resolution source files publicly available.
As additional original production images become available, this archive will be updated where possible to document further examples from the Battles in Time card collections.
Production File Archive
Many of the digital images documented in this archive were extracted from the original Adobe InDesign (INDD) production files used to create the Battles in Time card layouts.
Access to these original files was made possible through Ben Robinson, Creative Director at Master Replicas and a member of the original Battles in Time production team. Ben assisted the archive by extracting and cropping individual images from the original layouts for preservation and documentation.
An example of one of the original INDD production files is shown alongside this section.
Image Cropping
Because the source material consists of complex production files created more than two decades ago, some extracted images contain minor cropping or positioning issues. These are known issues within the archive and will be corrected where possible as the source files are reviewed and processed further.
Missing Digital Artwork
Due to the time that has elapsed since the original Battles in Time production, some digital artwork has not yet been recovered. At present, the Test Set, Daleks vs Cybermen and Adventurer collections are among the sets for which the corresponding production artwork remains unavailable within the archive.
The majority of the original series has nevertheless been successfully documented through recovered digital production material. The ongoing recovery of these files provides an opportunity to preserve artwork in its original digital form and to document the source imagery used for the physical trading cards.
Though like the rest of the site, these images are for the benefit of everyone, however if you use these images I would appreciate credit as numerous hours of work has gone into this website to get to this stage thank you!
Due to over 1000 image files I have seperated these into their corresponding pages. If I am able to get other sets, I will add them when I can!
